The new model year’s Acuras such as the current year’s TL have occupied numerous headlines recently, though the 2009 Acura RL earns its fair share of attention as well. Here’s some of what we read in published information from Acura.
The RL offers one of the most powerful and refined V-6 engines in its class, with a new 3.7-liter VTEC engine producing a peak of 300 horsepower. Torque has been increased to 271, while EPA mileage with the AWD drivetrain is 16 city / 22 highway. This technologically advanced engine includes the following features:
- Variable Valve Timing and Electronic Lift Control (VTEC), which adjusts timing and lift of the 24 valves according to rpm, facilitating immediate response
- PGM-FI Programmed Fuel Injection, ensuring precise, efficient fuel use
- Drive-by-Wire throttle system, providing a smoother and more precise accelerator connection
VTEC, which stands for Variable valve Timing and Electronic lift Control, is a little like having an on-demand racing camshaft in your engine to give you high rpm power without compromising low rpm torque.
- When engine speed reaches a designated rpm, the intake and exhaust valves open deeper and longer to enhance airflow and allow the RL to continue to build horsepower at levels where other engines may run out of steam.
- When used in tandem with the 2-Stage manifold system, the driver enjoys plenty of low-end power around town and reserve power on the open road.
